Whether you fish from boat or land, anglers have seen strong action this year. However, make sure your gear can handle a fish over 100 pounds!

Before planning your trip, always check the current Minnesota DNR fishing regulations for the latest sturgeon season dates, tag requirements, and possession rules.

Sturgeon Fishing Tips for Rainy Lake Anglers

  • It is recommended to use a circle hook to allow for easy release.
  • Always support the fish horizontally. Do not hold sturgeon in a vertical position by their head, gills or tails, even for taking photos.
  • Before you bring a big fish into your boat, make sure fishing rods, tackle boxes and other loose objects are out of the way.
  • Never touch their eyes or gills.
  • Minimize their time out of the water.
  • Remember, some fish are just too big to safely bring into your boat.

You can also watch a recent Rainy Lake sturgeon fishing video to see the action from the water.

Sturgeon Tag season from July 1 – Sep 30:

  • Keep 1 per calendar year.
  • Fish must be 45″-50″ inclusive or over 75″.
  • Fish must be immediately tagged and registered within 48 hours.

Sturgeon are powerful fish, so preparation matters. Bring gear that can handle a long fight, and make sure your landing area is clear before the fish reaches the boat or shoreline. If you plan to take photos, keep the fish supported horizontally and return it to the water as quickly as possible.

Because regulations can change, anglers should always confirm the current season dates, tag requirements, and possession rules before fishing.
