We know… it’s already a long drive from Twin Cities to the Rainy Lake area. But for travelers with extra time (or those looking to truly experience the Northwoods), these stops are worth the detour off HWY 53.

Cloquet

Jay Cooke State Park

Park at the historic River Inn and set out on the iconic Swinging Bridge which sways above the St. Louis River. This route is accessible to all. Visit Oldenburg Point for Civilian Conservation Corps structures and glorious views over the St. Louis River valley. Visit the Thomson Pioneer Cemetery which dates back to the late 1800s.

Iron Range

US Hockey Hall of Fame – Eveleth

The Hull Rust Mine is one of the largest open-pit iron ore mines in the world and a can’t-miss stop on Minnesota’s Iron Range. From the overlook, visitors can watch enormous haul trucks at work deep in the pit and at the visitor area, kids (and adults!) can climb the stairs and stand next to a full-size mining truck, putting its massive scale into perspective.
