Nestled on the Canadian border in the Minnesota Northwoods on the shores of Beautiful Rainy Lake, The Thunderbird has been serving up legendary full-service resort experiences for our guests since 1937.

Located just across Highway 11 from the Voyageurs National Park Rainy Lake Visitors Center, The Thunderbird is the closest and most convenient basecamp for all year-round park activities.

The Thunderbird resort is located on 54 acres of Minnesota Northwoods with 1,200 feet of shoreline on beautiful Rainy Lake. The lake is over 225,000 square acres with over 1,500 islands to explore!

The Thunderbird has 15 renovated lodge rooms. All rooms are fully equipped and feature high-speed wireless internet service, coffee makers, microwave ovens, mini refrigerators and satellite TVs.

The resort features 10 lakeside cabins – all with views of and direct access to Rainy Lake and the Marina. All cabins are private with decks, BBQ grills and full kitchens. Most are newly remodeled.

Fresh towel service and trash removal available daily in all cabins and lodge rooms.

Our world-class Dining Room has a renowned reputation and beautiful views of Rainy Lake. Executive Chef John Barnes creates amazing signature dishes and daily specials. Mouthwatering Prime rib, Parmesan Crusted Walleye and hand-cut steaks are served daily. Reservations are recommended, please call (218) 286-3151.

Our legendary lakeside Cocktail Lounge features a full-service copper top bar with friendly, experienced bartenders, spectacular views, several large-screen TVs, a jukebox, dance floor and large stone fireplace.

The Dining Room and Lounge offer a large expanded outdoor deck overlooking beautiful Rainy Lake, with food and beverage service.

Rainy Lake is a boater’s paradise! The Marina at The Thunderbird offers premium fuel and oil, dock space, loading and unloading, boat storage and minor repair services.

Rainy Lake is a year-round world-class fishery! Our fishing guide partners are listed below. 

Complimentary guest use of kayaks, paddleboards, a paddleboat and well-stocked firepit are available on the beach.

Boat and snowmobile rentals are available on-site.
