Snowmobiling is one of the most popular Rainy Lake winter activities. International Falls, Rainy Lake, and Voyageurs National Park offer access to miles of groomed trails.

The International Voyageurs Snowmobile Club maintains about 158 miles of trails. These routes include lake runs, portages, wilderness routes, and connections to nearby communities. These trails also connect to the broader network reaching Kabetogama, Ash River, Crane Lake, and even as far as Ely, Virginia, Hibbing, Grand Rapids and Bemidji, opening up vast possibilities for long-distance snowmobile adventures.

Places to grab lunch or dinner that you will find on the snowmobile map:

#8 Thunderbird Lodge on Rainy Lake
#85 Boondocks in Ray

#93 The Chocolate Moose in International Falls

Beyond the groomed trails within the park, the vast frozen expanse of Rainy Lake itself invites exploration, offering opportunities for unparalleled powder riding.

Dark-Sky Viewing Near Rainy Lake

Voyageurs National Park is known for exceptional dark skies. The park has earned International Dark Sky Park certification for its efforts to protect the night sky.

Winter can be a great time for stargazing. Long nights, frozen lakes, and wide-open views create strong conditions for seeing stars and, sometimes, the Northern Lights.

However, aurora sightings are never guaranteed. Before heading out, check the forecast and dress for cold nighttime conditions.

Whether you explore the park by snowshoe, ski, snowmobile, or choose to camp beneath the stars, a breathtaking celestial show awaits. Learn more about the park’s dark skies and its International Dark Sky Park designation.
