Planning your drive north? These Highway 53 stops make the trip to the Rainy Lake area more memorable, especially if you have time for scenic detours, historic sites, museums, overlooks, trails, and local landmarks.
We know it is already a long drive from the Twin Cities to the Rainy Lake area. However, if you want to experience more of the Northwoods along the way, these stops are worth adding to your route.
Worthwhile Stops Along Highway 53
Cloquet
Jay Cooke State Park
First, park at the historic River Inn and set out on the iconic Swinging Bridge which sways above the St. Louis River. This route is accessible to all. Visit Oldenburg Point for Civilian Conservation Corps structures and glorious views over the St. Louis River valley. Visit the Thomson Pioneer Cemetery which dates back to the late 1800s.

Iron Range
US Hockey Hall of Fame Stop
Make a quick and memorable stop at the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Museum in Eveleth. Located just off Highway 53, this iconic museum is a must-see for hockey fans. Explore interactive exhibits, historic trophies, and legendary stories that showcase Minnesota’s impact on the game. 🏒
Leonidas Overlook Stop
Leonidas Overlook gives travelers a quick look at the mining landscape that shaped the Iron Range. It’s an easy stop if you want a view of the region’s history without adding a long detour to your Highway 53 route.
Minnesota Discover Center
The Minnesota Discovery Center shares the story of the Iron Range through exhibits, historic buildings, and family-friendly activities. If you want to understand the people, mining history, and culture of northern Minnesota, this is a worthwhile stop before continuing north.
Hull Rust Mine View
The Hull Rust Mine is one of the largest open-pit iron ore mines in the world and a can’t-miss stop on Minnesota’s Iron Range. From the overlook, visitors can watch enormous haul trucks at work deep in the pit and at the visitor area, kids (and adults!) can climb the stairs and stand next to a full-size mining truck, putting its massive scale into perspective.

Bob Dylan Childhood Home Stop
Music fans can make a quick stop by Bob Dylan’s childhood home in Hibbing. While it’s more of a photo stop than a full attraction, it adds a fun piece of Minnesota music history to the drive.
Cook
Superior State Forest
Superior State Forest offers a quieter Northwoods break near Cook. If you want to stretch your legs, enjoy the trees, or take a slower scenic pause, this is a peaceful stop before heading farther north.
Orr
Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary Stop
Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary near Orr is best known for black bear viewing. Because hours and seasons can vary, check ahead before adding it to your Highway 53 stops.
Crane Lake
Vermilion Falls
Vermilion Falls is a short, scenic stop near Crane Lake with rushing water, rocky views, and a quick trail. It’s a good choice if you want a nature stop that does not take too much time.
Echo Trail

Blind Ash Bay Trail
