Like many of you, we’re closely monitoring the wildfires burning across northern Minnesota and Canada. Our thoughts are with the communities that have been impacted and the firefighters and emergency personnel working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, businesses, and our beautiful forests.
Current Conditions
Updated: 7/17/26
Smoke moved into the Rainy Lake area overnight and remains in the region today. While it rained in the area this morning, wildfire smoke continues to affect local air quality. Visitors may notice hazy skies and the smell of smoke, and conditions may change throughout the day as winds shift.
Recent wind patterns have carried the heaviest wildfire smoke into central and southern Minnesota, while the Rainy Lake area is experiencing lighter smoke impacts now. Although conditions here are currently not as severe as in some other parts of the state, air quality can fluctuate quickly depending on wind direction and wildfire activity.
Visitors, especially those who are sensitive to smoke, should check current air quality conditions before and during their trip. Please refer to the resources below for the latest air quality information and wildfire updates.

Visitors should be aware that Voyageurs National Park currently has a campfire ban in effect due to elevated fire danger. Campfires are prohibited until further notice.
